FRANKELPLUS is a small, well-funded, information-led start-up like no other you’ll come across. We are based half a dozen miles south of Leeds in the city of Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

 

We operate, very profitably, in a niche market within the fast-moving financial sports markets. The particular niche we currently operate in has a market turnover of £4bn a year in

the UK alone.

 

  • Our first goal is to build our market share in this sector to 1% (you can do the maths). 

  • Our second is to develop this same market internationally.

  • Our third goal is a gradual move, over the next three to five years, into other related markets, firstly within the UK and then internationally. 

We do the most unexpected things. Some would call it counter-intuitive; we call it superb business practice.

 

We are not about the big and the brash, fighting for survival in the corporate shark tank. We are about the calm and collected: identifying, gathering and interpreting the silent clues, hidden in plain sight and delivering them - beautifully packaged.

We believe the best solutions (products) emerge from highly collaborative cross-functional teams, where everyone has a stake in what is being built and a clear understanding of why, rather than just concerning themselves with how to deliver it.

We expect to remain small(ish). Initially we’ll have 4 or 5 staff maximum. We may grow in numbers over time; however, we expect that your combined expertise and skills, your leverage of the best available technology and software will significantly improve our productivity and profitability year-on-year. You're keen to use your recently acquired expertise to make an impact. You'll relish the opportunity to ''roll up your sleeves'' and ‘'get stuck in’', tackling real issues. Finding solutions that you can test and refine to near perfection excites you.

We are looking for 4 or 5 enthusiastic graduates with a passion for problem solving in general and predictive analytics in particular. You'll be working in an incredibly data-rich environment.

 

At FRANKELPLUS you’ll refine your existing skills whilst learning and developing new ones, but before you apply to join us check the following requirements:

  • A BSc., MSc or PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science or other highly numerate subject, supported by good A levels, maybe including an A level in Mathematics. We are seeking graduates who are looking for analytical roles and are interested in working with technology. 

  • The ability to interpret complex data using a variety of analytical, statistical and/or machine learning techniques. We are currently considering using Microsoft Azure ML Studio, however, you'll be at liberty to suggest alternatives.

  • Software underpins many of the solutions we provide, so you will need to have some programming skills. We do not expect you to be an expert, but a basic grounding in, for example, one of the following core languages, Java, Python, C, C#, C++, R, would certainly be a plus.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts to others (others not as well versed as yourself) from different backgrounds.

  • A willingness and capacity to learn new domains and technologies (supported by our ongoing bespoke Training & Development).

  • A demonstrable interest in technology.

  • Excellent work ethic and professional demeanour.

  • Highly organised and detail-oriented.

  • Smart, creative thinker and problem-solver, a fast learner.

  • You enjoy using your initiative.

  • A good knowledge of and experience of using MS Excel.

Job Title: Data Analysts (& Researchers)  

                 (Full Time: 35hrs)

                 Monday – Friday: 9AM – 5PM

 

Our analysts will be lightning-fast coders who can surf vast datasets quickly, encountering and surfacing potential insights faster than other specialists can say “whiteboard.” Your coding style may well baffle traditional software engineers — but you’ll leave them in the dust due to your speed. Speed is your highest virtue, closely followed by the ability to identify potentially useful gems. A mastery of visual presentation of information helps too. Beautiful and effective plots will allow us to extract information faster, which pays off in time-to-potential-insights. Your efforts will result in our business getting a finger on its pulse and eyes on previously-unknown unknowns.

 

Your goal: To generate the inspiration that helps us select valuable quests to send our statisticians and ML engineers on, saving them from mathematically-impressive excavations of useless rabbit holes.

Job Title:  Statisticians (& Researchers)

                  (Full Time: 35hrs)

                  Monday – Friday: 9AM – 5PM 

 

As a Statistician you’re a specialist in coming to conclusions beyond our data safely. You’ll be our best protection against fooling ourselves in an uncertain world. To you, inferring something sloppily is a greater sin than leaving your mind a blank slate, so, as a good Statistician, we'll expect you to put the brakes on our exuberance. You’ll care deeply about whether the methods applied are right for the problem and you will agonize over which inferences are valid from the information at hand.

 

Your goal: To provide a perspective that helps us make important decisions in a risk-controlled manner. In other words, you’ll use data to minimize the chance that we come to an unwise conclusion.

 

Your Claim to Fame: Rigor.

Job Title:  Machine Learning/AI Engineers (& Researchers)

                  (Full Time: 35hrs)

                  Monday – Friday: 9AM – 5PM 

You’ll have the coding skills to build both prototypes and production systems that work and the stubborn resilience to fail every hour for several months if that’s what it takes! As a machine learning specialist, you’ll know that you won’t find the perfect solution in a textbook. Instead, you’ll be engaged in a marathon of trial-and-error. Having a great intuition for how long it’ll take you to try each new option will be a huge plus and is more valuable than an intimate knowledge of how the algorithms work (though it’s nice to have both). Performance means more than clearing a metric — it also means reliable, scalable, and easy-to-maintain models that perform well in production. Engineering excellence is a must.

 

Your goal: To eventually deliver a system that automates tricky tasks well enough to pass our statistician’s strict testing bar and deliver the audacious performance our business requires.

All these positions offer a unique ground-floor opportunity in a well-funded and highly profitable start-up. Successful candidates will be working at the cutting edge of Predictive Modelling within financial sports markets. As such you will have significant opportunities for career development in the UK and possibly overseas. In return you will be expected to work effectively as part of an elite projects team.

Your first task will be to assist in the creation of a world class Database with which to refine and enhance our existing products.

 

Your focus will then turn to the identification and development of new opportunities (products) in our existing markets and new markets. All of our products are the result of high quality Data Gathering, Cleaning, Analysis & Research and Predictive Modelling.

In particular these roles collectively will include:

  • Designing, developing, implementing and maintaining data models.

  • Researching and analysing market trends and statistics to make modelling decisions.

  • Performing daily statistical analyses (e.g. risk analytics, default risk modelling, etc.) and coding tasks (e.g. data mining).

  • Running models, looking for exceptions and taking corrective action.

  • Building on knowledge of the technological tools used to conduct analyses.

  • Accessing technologies - extracting and pre-processing data for populating models.

  • Building knowledge of the processes and trading products and from this determining which analytical methodologies and approaches best support the performance, risk or valuation of the products.

  • Communicating analytical results to other stakeholders of the products.

The above positions will enjoy the following benefits:

    • A starting salary of £52,000 per annum.  In addition to this great start we offer a Triple Lock on your Salary. Our Triple Lock guarantees that your basic pay will rise, each year, by a minimum of either 3.5%, the rate of inflation (CPI) or average earnings growth, whichever is the greater. And just for the record, there is no gender pay gap whatsoever at FRANKELPLUS and there never will be.

    • Once a year you’ll receive a £250 Birthday Meal Allowance (Tax Paid) and we give you the day off too.

    • We recognise that ​a person is more vulnerable than at most other times when they are uprooting themselves and starting a new life, only anchored to their new location by a new job.   • Profit Share

    • Four months after any of the various projects you’ll be working on ‘come on stream’ and assuming they are generating a profit, you’ll receive a share in those profits. These payments will be made each quarter and will be subject to the profitability of the various products. Your profit share will continue for as long as the product's life-cycle and as long as you are working with us, irrespective of how your role may change over time.

  • Annual Bonus

    • After you have worked with us for 12 months you’ll become eligible for our Annual Bonus. This is based on FRANKELPLUS's profitability. After taking account of any capital expenditure requirements for the coming year, plus an amount set aside for our reserve fund, we share a proportion of our profits, equally, with our staff. This is paid once a year.

  • Charitable Support

    • Each year we ask our staff to suggest Charities (preferably local ones) they would like FRANKELPLUS to support. We set aside a percentage of our profits for just this purpose. Your nominated Charity (along with other staff members nominated Charities) will share in the profit percentage equally.

    • We may also select each year, from the above Charities, one that we offer additional help to. This could include ‘hands on involvement’, during office hours, by the whole team. We take our commitment to social responsibility very seriously and track the effectiveness of our contributions carefully.

  • Comprehensive Benefits Package

    • Every 5 years you will be entitled to a 5 week 'sabbatical', on full pay. You can add your sabbatical to other holiday​ entitlements giving you a potential maximum of 11 consecutive weeks.

    • In addition to our Private Company Retirement Fund is the mandatory Workplace Pension you’ll be enrolled in and into which FRANKELPLUS contributes an amount equivalent to no less than 8% of your salary.
